Theatrical Lighting: From the newest LED trends to the traditional art form

Thursday, October 17, 2019 (12:00 PM-1:00 PM)

The presentation will include an overview of typical theatrical lighting fixture types and their uses. This will include automated fixtures, the newest various LED fixtures, and numerous types of incandescent conventional fixtures that are still in use in large numbers. We will also look at some unique historic theatrical technology. An overview of traditional dimmer and newer relay-based power distribution requirements will be covered, and we will discuss basic DMX wiring scenarios and typical controller types. Lastly, we will briefly look at some advanced lighting technologies such as fixture tracking, DMX based media servers, video walls and pixel mapping.

Wireless Lighting: Security Basics (Definitions of Authentication, Encryption, and Certificates)

Thursday, November 14, 2019 (12:00 PM-1:00 PM)

Why do we want to talk about security? Security implementations in Lighting Control Systems is major differentiator. Increasing numbers of networked devices, their hardware, software, and communications must be secured. Yet few of us have a security background. This presentation provides an overview of wireless lighting security basics: concerns around wireless devices, definitions on Authentication, Encryption, and Certificates, and considerations for implementing security in wireless lighting controls.

TM-21 – The Ethical Specification of LED Lifetime

Thursday, December 19, 2019 (12:00 PM-1:00 PM)

The end of the lamp-and-luminaire convention heaps responsibility on the lighting specifier to select solid-state fixtures that will meet end user needs for years or decades to come. The lion’s share of specification grade LED luminaires available today feature limited preconceived field service capabilities, so failures result in total luminaire replacement. The associated costs of this reality are difficult to explain, and defend. To protect client interests and their own, specifiers can learn to identify credible LED lifetime claims in a market increasingly afflicted by noise. ANSI/IES LM-80 and TM-21 are widely misused by suppliers across the global lighting industry with some vendors presenting LED lifetime claims exceeding the average human life expectancy of most countries. Join us for a clarifying discussion about the purpose and continued relevancy of these standards, and best practices of applying them to specification.

Wireless Lighting Control

Thursday, January 16, 2020 (12:00 PM-1:00 PM)

Wireless lighting control has matured to offer a powerful and versatile option for control communication. By replacing control wiring with radio signals, wireless devices and systems offer the same functionality and benefits while providing the distinctive benefits of installation cost savings and greater flexibility. With wireless control, the most advanced control systems can be implemented in both new and existing buildings.

In this presentation developed by the Lighting Controls Association and presented by lighting control industry veteran Gary Meshberg, you will learn the major types of wireless approaches, equipment, applications, protocols, and design and installation considerations.
